What a fantastic day. The weather was perfect and The Dandenongs was a beautiful backdrop for our AFL themed Reading Corner. Our reading corners are an opportunity for kids to meet our literacy dogs and find out what Canine Comprehension is all about. It is a great opportunity for kids to sit with the dogs, enjoy reading some books and have a positive experience with both books and dogs.
Canine Comprehension was created to for kids to enjoy tutoring sessions by using Animal Assisted Therapy trained dogs to encourage a positive approach to literacy. This was achieved today.
As kids arrived they were invited to grab a book and sit with the dogs or grab some crayons and enter our colouring in competition. It is heart warming to watch the quiet time, where kids are sitting around and silently enjoying their activity and the dogs.
Our first 'story time' was fun! Sarah read 'Why I love footy' and the kids enjoyed listening along.
After David Macdonald came down and played footy tunes on the Bagpipes. A few songs were recognised and we even had kids get up and dance to 'Bob the Builder' on the bagpipes.
The rest of the day included kids playing games, watching a trick training demo and taking their time with the books.
Reading should be about just enjoying the simple process of engaging with a good book. We often talk to parents about getting their kids to have positive experiences with reading and if that process is enjoyed it is much easier for parents to encourage kids to read. Once kids enjoy the reading process literacy, memory, imagination, emotional intelligence and concentration is improved through reading.
We would like to thank all the families who came down to Rainy Day Books and made our event a success. We would love to see you again. Please recommend us to your school, or think about using us as your English tutor.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
