Therapy Dogs Making a Difference: A Look at Three Students' Journeys Through Their School Program

1. Peter finds a safe space with Jett

For four years, Peter has called his School his safe place. His family life is marked by trauma and complexity, which often manifests in his problematic behaviour at school. Living with his grandmother and an older sibling, Peter faced challenges in social interactions and forming friendships before his inclusion in our program.

Struggles and Challenges

Before joining our program, Peter's interactions with peers and staff were characterised by a lack of awareness of social cues and inappropriate behavior. He struggled to understand patience and often walked away when attention or desired items were not immediately granted, hindering his ability to form friendships and engage positively with others.

Growth and Connection

As Peter participated in our program sessions, remarkable changes began to unfold. With our mentors' guidance and Jett, our therapy dog's presence, Peter learned to wait patiently and interact with increased respect and understanding. Peter's confidence grew by giving commands and instructions to Jett, leading to more positive interactions and forming a classroom friendship with another student.

Continued Progress and Confidence

In the aftermath of the program, Peter's progress was evident. His engagement and understanding increased significantly, and his ability to wait and remain with the group improved. Most importantly, the newfound confidence gained from training Jett, the therapy dog, translated into more appropriate communication and a growing sense of self-worth for Peter.

When Jake first met Victor, his fear of dogs was palpable. Hiding behind his supporting teacher, Bec, Jake could barely bring himself to glance at Victor, let alone touch him. Every movement from the therapy dog elicited a quick retreat from Jake, who steadfastly avoided eye contact.

From Fear to Comfort

Despite his initial trepidation, Jake's subsequent encounters with Victor marked a gradual shift. With careful guidance and patience, Jake began to show signs of increased comfort and curiosity. Jake's progress was evident from tentatively patting Victor at a safe distance to bravely sitting closer and even playing gently with Victor's tail.

Walking Victor Through the School

In a pivotal moment of triumph, Bec and our mentor, Mini offered Jake the opportunity to walk Victor through the school. With a second lead added to Victor's harness, Jake tentatively took hold, his steps full of determination. As Victor led the way, Jake's confidence soared, evidenced by his beaming smile and pride in his accomplishment.

3.  Ryan's Growth: How Canine Comprehension Unleashed Confidence at His Secondary College

In the heart of Ryan's Secondary College, amidst the ebb and flow of student life, lies a tale of transformation and newfound confidence. In this case study we unveil the remarkable journey of Ryan as he navigates the complexities of adolescence with the support of our Canine Comprehension program. Through Ryan's story, we witness the profound impact of therapy dogs in fostering social connections, self-assurance, and a sense of belonging.

Navigating Adolescence Amidst Change

Rain's home life is marked by separation and inconsistency, with occasional visits to his the mother while residing primarily with his the father. Having attended his Secondary College since year 7, Ryan's journey has been characterisedby social engagement and communication challenges.

A Portrait of Reservedness

Before Ryan's inclusion in our program, he presented with low motivation, minimal social engagement, and delayed speech. Often sitting away from peers during lunch and recess, Ryan appeared reserved and disconnected from the social fabric of school life.

Blossoming Confidence with Minnie

Upon joining our Canine Comprehension program, Ryan approached group activities with reservation, choosing to observe from the sidelines. However, a transformation began to unfold as he interacted with Minnie, our therapy dog. Despite initial timidity, Ryan gradually became more open and assertive while training Minnie and encouraging the therapy dog to explore different parts of the school, signalling a newfound confidence.

A Flourishing Sense of Self

Ryan's growth and progress were undeniable in the wake of the program. Staff members observed Ryan forming more social connections and actively engaging with peers during lunch and recess. With newfound confidence and conveystation openness, Ryan emerged from the program as a more self-assured and socially engaged individual than before.

Through patient guidance and Minnie's companionship, Ryan discovered a sense of belonging and confidence that transcended the confines of his previous reservedness.
